Meenakshi and Rohit Go to the Dentist

The students are able to read a passage aloud and answer questions based on the passage.

Summary:

The situation for this Lesson Plan is Meenakshi and Rohit Go to the Dentist. The Lesson Plan is divided into 4 sections:

  • The first section Read Out Loud helps the students read a passage.
  •  The second section Comprehension section based on the passage.
  •  The third section Let’s Learn New Things is on vocabulary.
  • The fourth section Writing helps the students write sentences on their own.

Section 1: Read out Loud

Time: 30 minutes
Objective: The students are given a passage to read.

Activity 1:

Distribute the following handout (Meenakshi and Rohit Go to the Dentist):

Handout:

Rohit and Meenakshi have just come out of their classroom.

“I have a toothache,” says Rohit.

“Oh!” says Meenakshi. “Does it hurt?”

“Yes,” replies Rohit.

“Let us go see a dentist then,” says Meenakshi.

“Is there a dentist’s clinic around here?” asks Rohit.

“I don’t know,” replies Meenakshi “But there must be one in the market. Let’s go and find out.”

So, Meenakshi and Rohit go to see a dentist. They take an auto-rickshaw to the nearby market. As soon as they reach, they ask a shopkeeper. The shopkeeper tells them where the dentist’s clinic is.

Meenakshi and Rohit go to the dentist’s clinic. They make an appointment. The dentist gives Rohit medicine for his toothache.{alertInfo}


Teacher Note:

Read out the passage for the students, explaining the meaning of each sentence. Then, ask the
entire class to read out the passage. After that, make each student read out the passage.

If required, you can explain the meaning of the following terms:
3. Dentist – a doctor who looks after people’s teeth. (दाँतों का डॉक्टर)
4. Clinic – a place for treatment of illness.5. Appointment – a meeting set for a fixed timing or date.
6. Medicine – drug (दवाई)


Section 2: Comprehension 

Time: 20 minutes
Objective: The students have to work on a comprehension exercise.

Activity 2:

Write down the following questions on the blackboard:
1. Who has a toothache?
2. Who do Meenakshi and Rohit go to see?
3. How do Meenakshi and Rohit go to the market?
4. Who tells them where the dentist’s clinic is?
5. What does the dentist give Rohit for his toothache?
Divide the class into pairs, and ask them to answer the above questions. Give them fifteen minutes
to find the answers. Then, one person from each pair/both students can read out their answers.
After all of them have read out, tell them the correct answers:
6. Rohit has a toothache.
7. Meenakshi and Rohit go to see a dentist.
8. Meenakshi and Rohit take an auto-rickshaw to the market.
9. The shopkeeper tells them where the dentist’s clinic is.
10. The dentist gives Rohit medicine for his toothache.


Section 3: Let’s Learn New Things 

Time: 30 minutes
Objective: The students are given new words and terms to learn.

Activity 3:

Write down the following on the blackboard:
1. Patient – the one who is ill (मरीज)
2. Admit – to get a room
3. Suffer – to feel pain (कष्ट झेलना)
4. Disease – illness (बीमारी)
5. Surgery – operation
6. Recover – to become better (बीमारी से ठीक होना)
7. Injury – harm is done to a person (by accident, for example) (चोट, ज़उम)
8. Treatment – the act of treating a patient (with medicines, for example) (इलाज करना)
9. Private hospital – a hospital not run by the state government.
10. Emergency ward/Casualty – A part of a hospital. It is where the most urgent cases are
treated.

Take the students through the word/term and its meaning. Give them some examples.
1. The patient is sleeping on a bed.
2. The sick man should admit himself in a hospital.19. He suffers from back pain.
3. What disease does he suffer from?
4. The patient will need surgery soon.
5. The patient will recover by tomorrow.
6. I have some injuries from an accident.
8. The patient is getting regular treatment.
9. We will need to take him to a private hospital.
10. She is staying in the casualty/emergency ward.


Teacher Note:

Now, ask the students to make their own sentences using the above words. Give them ten minutes to write the sentences. When the time’s up, let them read out whatever they have written. It’s all right if they haven’t made sentences with all the words.


Section 4: Writing 

Time: 10 minutes
Objective: The students are given some sentences to write.

Activity 4:

Ask the students to read out in the following sentences:
1. Rohit is not well.
2. He has fever.
3. He needs to see a doctor.
4. The doctor will know how to cure him.
5. He might get some medicine for his fever.

Then, ask them to rewrite the sentences putting Meenakshi in Rohit’s place.
1. Meenakshi is not well.
2. She has fever.
3. She needs to see a doctor.
4. The doctor will know how to cure her.
5. She might get some medicine for her fever.
