Goal of the activity:

The students are able to read a passage aloud and write a few sentences based on the passage.

Competency:

Basic Reading and Writing.

Preparation:

Read the Concept Note on Nouns and Verbs. Bring the “Meet Meenakshi and Rohit” handouts.

Summary:

The situation for this Lesson Plan is Meet Meenakshi and Rohit. The Lesson Plan is divided into 2 sections:

  • The first section Read Out Loud helps the students read a passage.
  • The second section Writing helps the students write sentences.


Section 1 : Read Out Loud 

Time: 50 minutes

Objective: The students are given a passage to read.


Suggested Activity:

Distribute the following handout (Meet Meenakshi and Rohit Handout):

Handout:

Meenakshi: “Hi! My name is Meenakshi. I am nineteen years old. I live in Delhi with my father and mother. I am an only child. I study at Shri Ram Das College. I am a first-year student. Rohit and I are classmates”

Rohit: “Hello, I am Rohit. I am nineteen. I live in Delhi with my parents and older sister, Tanuja. Tanuja is a doctor. I am studying at Shri Ram Das College and I’m Meenakshi’s classmate, as well as a friend.” {alertInfo}

Note to the teacher:

Read out the passage for the students, explaining the meaning of each sentence. Then, ask the entire class to read out the passage.

Then, divide the class into groups of three. Make each group read the passage. Try and ascertain which student in each group makes errors in pronunciation or is hesitant. Pick out those students and form a separate group. Let this last group read out the passage again, and correct whatever error is recognizable in their reading.

Lastly, make each student read out the passage on their own (silently).


Section 2: Writing 

Time: 40 minutes

Objective: The students understand how the same sentence can be written in different ways.


Mandatory activity:

Ask the students to consider the following sentences in their handout:

1. My name is Meenakshi.
I am Rohit.

2. I am a nineteen year old. I am nineteen.

3. I live in Delhi with my father and mother.
I live in Delhi with my parents….

4. I study at Shri Ram Das College.
I am studying at Shri Ram Das College.

5. Rohit and I are classmates.
I am Meenakshi’s classmate.

Now, write down the following on the blackboard and ask them to fill in the following with their own details:

1. My name is __________________.
I am _________________.

2. I am ___________ years old.
I am _____________.

3. I live in _____________ with ____________________.

4. I study at ________________.
I am studying at ____________________.

5. ______________ is my classmate.
______________ and I are classmates.
